Introducing Alexis Landry
Alexis Landry is a Lafayette-based dancer and choreographer. She began dancing at age five at the Gail Freese School of Dance and has more than 17 years of dance experience. She recently received her BFA in Dance from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
Alexis’ artistic practice sits at the intersection of artistry and athleticism. Her work explores the complexities of human emotion, relationships, and lived experiences, using movement as a means of storytelling and connection.
Throughout her career, she has performed and choreographed in An Evening of Dance, State of LA Danse, Spring Dance, and Fall Dance at UL Lafayette. She was also part of Basin Arts’ LINEAGE 2024 and modeled for Basin Arts’ mural.
Who makes up your art circle?
My art circle is made up of the people who support me and push me to take risks. My family nurtured my love for dance growing up; my friends continue to encourage and support me; and my fellow graduates and peers at UL push me to grow and do my best. Lastly, my dance teacher, Mrs. Angelina, introduced me to UL’s dance program and encouraged me to continue my dance education.
How do you expand your art circle?
I expand my art circle by pushing myself outside of my comfort zone. I try to take as many classes as I can in different styles and environments so I can meet new people. Whether it’s attending summer intensives, workshops, or masterclasses, I’m always looking for opportunities to learn and connect. I also try to participate in as many projects as I can to stay connected with my community.
What value do you see in having a creative community?
I think having a creative community can inspire you in ways you’ve never imagined. I believe everyone has something valuable to bring to the table. When dancing with others, there is always something you can take away from the experience. Simply being present and in the moment with other creatives can remind you why you fell in love with the art in the first place.
How does your artistic approach contribute to your community?
My artistic approach contributes to the community because I want to create experiences that allow audiences to see themselves within the work. I hope my work encourages audiences to reflect, feel, and connect with the human experiences being presented. Through movement and performance, I continue to explore what it means to be human and how our individual stories can create points of connection with one another.
