Introducing Charlie Novak

Charlie Novak is a Lafayette native musician who graduated from Ovey Comeaux High School. Charlie has been playing guitar for 12 years and studied music theory through the performing arts academy at Comeaux. He is currently pursuing a degree at ULL. While pursuing his degree, he’s been performing live and releasing music with local groups like The Fizgigs, Genuine Mustard, and Doggish, as well as his solo project since 2019. Charlie has also been teaching private guitar lessons in the community since 2022.

Who makes up your art circle?

The incredible scene of musicians and artists we have here in Lafayette. I am fortunate enough to have so many talented artists as my closest friends. Whether that be musicians, visual artists, or writers. We are all intertwined and have the chance to support each other in the most beautiful way.

How do you expand your art circle?

Local shows at venues like Blue Moon and Loose Caboose! I’m always meeting new bands and artists that I haven’t had a chance to see. Also, just walking around downtown Lafayette, especially during art walk, I tend to meet new folks who inspire me and share a love of our community.

What value do you see in having a creative community?

The opportunity to share art and to uplift each other. At times, it can be very difficult to be an artist and to convince yourself to keep creating.  There’s nothing like having a community behind you.

How does your artistic approach contribute to  your community?

My intention with playing and teaching music is to encourage people to make music of their own and to share it through song writing and live shows. Even if music isn’t your main form of expression, I want to create an environment that is inclusive to all kinds of musicians and artists.
