Christian Smith is a Lafayette born and raised dancer whose artistic journey began in 2021, when he started training and performing under the direction of Leigha T. Porter, founder of F.I.R.E Expressions Performing Arts Conservatory. Through that experience, Christian began developing his movement practice, gaining performance experience, and building a stronger connection to Lafayette’s dance community.
Now, Christian is entering a new chapter as a freshman at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, where he is beginning his studies in the UL Dance Program. As he continues his training, he is also expanding his artistic circle by connecting with dancers, mentors, and other creatives throughout the Lafayette area.
Who makes up your art circle?
My art circle is made up of Ms. Leigha Porter, Ms. A’Myra Menard, and Ms. Clare Cook. Each of them has played a role in my growth and development as an artist.
How do you expand your art circle?
I expand my art circle by continuing to connect with artists throughout the Lafayette area, including artists I have had the opportunity to work with and collaborate alongside.
What value do you see in having a creative community?
The value I see in having a creative community is the ability for people to use art in different ways that bring others together. Creative communities can create connection and a sense of unity within the art world.
How does your artistic approach contribute to your community?
My artistic approach contributes to the community by showing people, especially young males, that it is 100% okay to push boundaries in the art world. I want my work to encourage others to see art as a space where they can challenge expectations and express themselves freely.
