Introducing Stella Walker

Stella Walker is a Lafayette-born ballet dancer who was recently accepted into the prestigious pre-professional program at Miami City Ballet School. She began her training at age five with Lafayette Ballet Theatre’s Dance Conservatory and has spent years dedicated to developing her skills and deepening her passion for classical ballet.
Stella has participated in summer training programs at the School of American Ballet, the official school of New York City Ballet, the Royal Ballet School in London, and Miami City Ballet School. She is now pursuing an immersive training experience as she works toward her goal of becoming a professional ballet dancer.
During her time with Lafayette Ballet Theatre, Stella trained under Mitzi and Shannon Heath and performed numerous roles in The Nutcracker, beginning as an angel and bunny before eventually taking on the role of Clara. She also appeared in LBT productions of Coppélia, Cinderella, and The Sleeping Beauty.
Beyond classical ballet, Stella has begun exploring contemporary and modern dance styles, including Horton technique, Merce Cunningham’s chance methods, and Graham technique.
Who makes up your art circle?
My art circle includes my family, my faith, and my friends. Over the past two years, my mom has traveled with me extensively for ballet, helping me advance my training and explore opportunities that align with my goals. It can be difficult to navigate this path as a teenager because advanced ballet training requires being open to moving away from home, sometimes more than once. To stay mentally strong, I turn to prayer and FaceTime calls with my friends back home.
How do you expand your art circle?
I started working with a ballet-focused mindset coach, who has been a huge help in navigating long audition seasons and stressful summer intensives. This experience has broadened my understanding of what it takes to prepare for a professional career in ballet.
Cross-training through classical Pilates, Gyrotonics, and neuro drills has also been a game changer in improving my ballet technique. I currently live in the Miami City Ballet School dorms with about 30 other students from around the world. It's been fun getting to know new people and supporting one another throughout this dance journey.
What value do you see in having a creative community?
I love being part of creative communities where different forms of art intersect. Miami City Ballet is located in South Beach, near the Art Deco District, and every day I'm surrounded by different kinds of art that inspire me as a dancer.
This summer, while studying in New York, Lincoln Center hosted numerous free outdoor dance and music events that brought people together to experience something new. Lafayette's ArtWalk offers our community similar opportunities to experience creativity and connect with the arts.
How does your artistic approach contribute to your community?
This will be my first year not performing in The Nutcracker. Miami City Ballet performs George Balanchine’s version, in which the student roles are reserved for much younger dancers. While I'll miss being part of the production, I know this change serves a purpose. As pre-professional students, we can focus on learning choreography for our student workshop performance in the spring.
I appreciate having this time to focus on the heart of ballet and continue developing as a dancer. I hope that one day I can return to Acadiana and help other dancers who share my love for ballet.
