Introducing Megan Tran

Megan Tran is a Lafayette native who originally began her career as a dancer, but has since experimented her way through the spectrum of art.  She’s acted in musicals, traveled the country as a burlesque dancer, directed a children’s carnival, produced theatre, and curated gallery exhibits.  With a focus on large community building projects, she gathered artists together and created spaces for them to shine.

Recently, her life has slowed down a bit.  As a first-time mom, her artwork has become more introspective, with a focus on painting and drawing.  She aims to capture those fleeting almost indescribable feelings that accompany this new stage of her life.

Who makes up your art circle?

In every phase of my very eclectic journey, I’ve had the honor of working with dedicated creators who make genuine magic happen.  Literally, my art circle includes at least one magician, a juggler, several clowns, lots of dancers, drag queens, painters, musicians, etc.  It’s a joy to see my community defying the odds every day through creation, despite how bleak times can feel.  In addition to my collection of artists, I am lucky to have extremely supportive family and friends who are the world’s best cheerleaders.  My circle has helped shape my view of the world, opening my mind to different ways of expression.

How do you expand your art circle?

The biggest way I’ve expanded my art circle is by inserting myself whether invited, or not.  I show up, and I bring my paintbrush.  I’m constantly working to overcome this fear of “not being good enough.” Whether or not I am, I give an effort, I audition, I submit a painting. By putting myself out there, I meet the most amazing people.

What value do you see in having a creative community?

Having worked on several large collaborative projects, I’ve learned so much about myself, how I work, how to set boundaries, and how to communicate.  Through collaboration, I’ve understood the importance of setting my ego aside and supporting another’s goals.   As an artist, it can be tempting to isolate yourself, and only focus on your own success.  It can feel like you must do it all, you must fight, or no one will take you seriously.  But your community is what is going to get you there in the end.  Be willing to give more than you receive, to create space for someone else, and your experience as an artist will grow exponentially.

How does your artistic approach contribute to your community?

My approach has always focused heavily on creating grand experiences and building a network of working artists.  In this new era of life, I am a bit more limited in the projects I can take on.  However, I do not find it restraining, I find motherhood to be fulfilling in ways I never could have expected.  I may no longer have time to attend rehearsals or organize variety shows, but I've become more thoughtful with my time.  Through my artwork, I reflect on childhood, hopes for my daughter's future, and the community I aim to surround her with.
